Our Service Framework: The ASCEND Institutional Excellence Model

The ASCEND Institutional Excellence Model provides a structured pathway for moving from research-teaching fragmentation to integration. Each level builds on the previous, allowing you to engage at the depth appropriate to your needs while maintaining flexibility to advance through deeper levels of transformation. This tiered approach guides our work across all engagements and ensures sustainable, measurable outcomes.

We will help you build systems that support faculty in doing what they do best: advancing knowledge while developing the next generation of citizens, workers, and scholars.

The model consists of five progressive levels, each building on the foundation of the previous stage. The tiered approach allows institutions to engage at the level appropriate to their needs and readiness, with the flexibility to progress through deeper levels of transformation as capacity and commitment grow. We work with you to design the engagement pathway that makes sense for your institution.

  • We conduct a comprehensive review of your institutional mission, strategic priorities, faculty policies, and support structures to understand how well they align with research-teaching integration. Through document analysis, data review, and stakeholder interviews, we identify where your systems create barriers to integration and where opportunities exist. You receive a detailed alignment report that classifies integration support as Full, Partial, or Minimal across key areas, with specific, actionable recommendations for improvement.

  • We design and administer customized faculty surveys and facilitate focus groups to understand the lived experience of research-teaching integration at your institution. Faculty tell us where they feel the tension most acutely, what supports would help, and where successful integration is already happening. We analyze this qualitative and quantitative data to provide you with a comprehensive evaluation report that identifies specific barriers, documents existing strengths, and recommends evidence-based strategies tailored to your faculty's needs and your institutional context.

  • We work alongside your team to implement the integration strategies identified in Levels 1 and 2. This includes training institutional leaders, redesigning policies that create barriers, launching new integration-supporting programs, and building internal capacity to sustain the work. We provide ongoing consultation and coaching, help you track implementation progress, and adjust strategies based on what we learn together. The goal is to ensure your institution can continue and expand this work independently after our formal partnership ends.

  • We measure the outcomes of your integration initiatives across multiple indicators: faculty satisfaction and wellbeing, research productivity, teaching quality, retention rates, and where possible, student outcomes. Through post-implementation surveys, interviews, and data analysis, we document what changed and calculate return on investment. You receive a comprehensive impact report that provides evidence for continued investment, supports accreditation narratives, and identifies opportunities for deepening integration work.

  • Through our optional aftercare retainer, we provide continued consultation as you deepen and expand integration across your institution. Annual or semi-annual check-ins help you address emerging challenges, refine policies and programs, support expansion to new departments, and maintain momentum. This ongoing relationship ensures you have expert guidance when questions arise and prevents integration from becoming a one-time initiative that fades when attention shifts elsewhere.

Flexible Engagement Options

Interested in supporting research-teaching integration at your institution? There are several ways to engage with the ASCEND model.

Focused Engagement: Engage at a single level based on specific needs. For example, institutions with recent assessment data might enter at Level 2, or those ready for implementation might begin at Level 3.

Progressive Partnership: Begin with Level 1 and progress through subsequent levels based on findings and readiness. This is our recommended approach for institutions seeking comprehensive transformation toward integration.

Customized Pathway: Work with us to design a customized engagement that addresses your unique circumstances, timeline, and budget while maintaining focus on research-teaching integration.
